Independent Member, Investment and Valuation Committee

About the role

Goodwell Investments, an impact investor active since 2006 with five private equity funds, is recruiting an independent member to join the Investment and Valuation Committee (IC) of its uMunthu II fund. The fund provides risk capital and hands-on support to impact-driven SMEs in Africa. The IC decides on investment and divestment matters in line with the fund's strategy and reviews the portfolio and valuations annually.

The committee currently has two Managing Partners and three independent members, chaired by one of them. The position is initially for four years, with an appropriate remuneration.

Key responsibilities

• Decide on investment and divestment issues of the fund in line with its investment strategy
• Anually review the entire investment portfolio and the valuations proposed by the Fund Manager
• Meet whenever a new investment is made or an investment is exited; on average about four meetings per year, mostly online, with occasional in-person meetings
• Allocate about 8-9 days a year to meetings, reading and preparation

Required profile

• Proven track record in an executive leadership role
• Strong diplomatic, problem-solving and interpersonal skills
• Deep local market understanding from years of living and working in an African region (SA, EA or WA)
• Extensive experience with development finance and impact investment, preferably in agriculture
• Demonstrable understanding of ESG themes
• Proficiency in investment banking, corporate finance and valuations, or a commitment to develop these skills
• Availability to devote sufficient time to the role and ability to travel occasionally
