Cargo Superintendent

About the role

The Cargo Superintendent is responsible for overseeing all marine cargo operations on offshore installations, ensuring safe reception, storage and off‑loading of crude oil while maintaining compliance with international maritime regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise operation of cargo heating coils, inert gas systems (IGS), ballast valves, cargo pumps and Crude Oil Washing (COW) machinery.
• Coordinate and audit tank records, including water/oil interfaces, temperature controls and crude oil sampling.
• Oversee crude oil reception, storage and off‑loading operations, guaranteeing equipment integrity.
• Manage first‑line maintenance in the pump‑room, directing mechanics and welders.
• Maintain operational readiness of cargo and ballast equipment such as ullage gauges and inert gas valves.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Nautical Sciences, Marine Engineering or equivalent maritime qualification.
• 10‑12 years of offshore experience on FPSOs or VLCCs, progressing to a Superintendent level.
• Fluency in English.
• Valid STCW Certificate of Competency (Master Mariner, Chief Officer or Chief Engineer – Class 1).

Required skills

• Operation of cargo heating coils, IGS, ballast valves and cargo pumps.
• Execution of Crude Oil Washing (COW) procedures and tank washing/gas‑freeing.
• Mastery of tandem offloading, dynamic positioning vessel interactions and emergency shutdown (ESD) systems.
• Control of IGS pressure, oxygen monitoring and high‑velocity vent valve testing.
• Proficiency with marine loading software (Loadmaster, Kongsberg K‑Gauge) and Distributed Control Systems (DCS) for remote valve and pump control.
