About the role
The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, is recruiting a Principal Investment Officer for its Manufacturing, Agribusiness and Services (MAS) team covering East and Southern Africa. The role is based in Luanda, Angola, reports to the Regional Industry Manager, Consumer Services, East and Southern Africa, and involves frequent travel within Africa. You will originate and close investments in tourism, property, retail, health and education, and work with country offices and colleagues in Washington DC.
Key responsibilities
- Originate and close first-of-their-kind loan, equity and mezzanine investments in Angola, building IFC's presence in a frontier market.
- Own a pipeline in tourism, property, retail, health and education, focusing on Angola while contributing to the wider MAS team.
- Shape deal strategy by assessing credit quality and development impact and recommending investments to IFC management.
- Lead transactions from mandate to close: due diligence, structuring, negotiation, syndication and mobilising private capital.
- Manage a growing portfolio and lead restructurings that protect IFC's investments and clients' businesses.
- Represent IFC with business owners, C-suite executives and senior government officials and advise them on financing and impact.
- Mentor junior colleagues across offices and share lessons on deal assessment.
Required profile
- MBA, master's degree in finance or a related degree.
- 15 years at a commercial or investment bank, development finance institution or private equity firm, with deal experience in Africa or other frontier markets.
- Track record originating, structuring and closing complex debt, mezzanine and equity deals.
- Leadership experience, such as leading a deal team or mentoring juniors in multicultural settings.
- Fluent English; Portuguese is strongly preferred for work in Angola.
Required skills
- Strong credit, financial analysis and risk mitigation skills, including restructuring or workout experience in difficult markets.
- Ability to build trust with business owners, C-suite executives, financial partners and senior government officials.
- Ability to use commercially available LLM tools such as Claude, ChatGPT and Copilot for research, analysis and drafting, validating outputs against primary sources.
Helpful but not required: consumer services or development finance experience. The World Bank Group offers a retirement plan, medical, life and disability insurance and paid leave, including parental leave.
