Engine Room Supervisor

About the role

The Engine Room Supervisor leads the safe operation and maintenance of all engine room equipment and vessel utility systems on SBM Offshore vessels. Reporting to the Maintenance Superintendent, you will ensure that plant start‑up, monitoring, shutdown and maintenance activities are carried out efficiently and in compliance with safety standards.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare engine room plant and systems for start‑up and oversee their safe operation.
• Monitor performance of engine room equipment and vessel utility systems during operation.
• Execute planned shutdowns, isolations and reinstatements for maintenance activities.
• Supervise Assistant Maintenance Supervisor, maintenance operators, vendor technicians and subcontractors.
• Plan and control resources including personnel, materials, transport and IT tools.
• Conduct briefings, toolbox talks and ensure clear communication of work scope.
• Promote training, competency assurance and assess sub‑ordinates against competence standards.
• Identify and recommend improvements to enhance safety, efficiency and profitability.

• Proven leadership and supervisory experience in a marine or offshore environment.
• Strong safety mindset with the ability to enforce safe work practices.
• Excellent communication and team‑building skills.
• Ability to assess competence and drive continuous improvement.

Required skills

• Operation of engine room plant and marine propulsion equipment.
• Maintenance of vessel utility systems (e.g., power, HVAC, fuel handling).
• Resource planning and allocation for maintenance activities.
• Competence assessment and training coordination.
