Senior Surveyor I

About the role

The Senior Surveyor I provides expert technical support for the classification and statutory compliance of vessels, platforms and other marine structures. Working primarily at assigned ports, the role ensures that all inspections meet ABS standards and international safety regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct routine surveys on classed vessels, offshore platforms and marine structures to verify compliance with ABS rules and statutory requirements.
• Prepare accurate, timely inspection reports and maintain organized survey files.
• Coordinate survey planning, scheduling and quality monitoring for assigned projects.
• Supervise and mentor junior surveyors, ensuring consistency and high‑quality output.
• Engage with clients to resolve technical issues and promote ABS services.
• Stay informed of new methods, regulations and industry developments, recommending process improvements as needed.

Required profile

• Relevant engineering or physical‑science degree (minimum two‑year program) or marine/nautical qualification with certified ship‑officer experience.
• Minimum three years experience as a Surveyor II, or eight years in an engineering/survey capacity with an IACS member society.
• Understanding of ABS strategic technical positioning within the marine industry.
• Appropriate certifications or licenses for the area of specialization.

Required skills

• Knowledge of ABS Rules, Guides and related statutory maritime regulations.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering plans and shipbuilding documentation.
• Familiarity with shipbuilding practices and vessel operation concepts.
• Competence in applying ABS Employee Safety Policy and related safety procedures.
