Urban Development, Housing and Solid Waste Management Intern

About the role

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN‑Habitat) is seeking a motivated intern to support sustainable urban development, housing policy, and solid waste management initiatives in Angola. The 6‑month, non‑paid internship is based in Luanda and offers hands‑on experience with UN‑Habitat’s regional programmes.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in identifying community opportunities, translating problems into project concepts, and supporting resource mobilisation.
• Prepare meeting materials for potential partners and donors and develop communication and outreach tools.
• Support implementation of UN‑Habitat portfolios, track key indicators, and report feedback to partners and regional offices.
• Contribute to field work, site inspections, and the preparation of design drawings, specifications, and visual aids.
• Collect and analyse data on waste streams, support the design of community‑based recycling initiatives, and help prepare reports and awareness materials.
• Maintain website and social media content, and perform miscellaneous assignments as needed.

Required profile

• Enrolled in or recently completed a graduate or final‑year undergraduate programme (Bachelor, Master, PhD) in a relevant field such as urban planning, architecture, civil engineering, environmental science, or waste management.
• Demonstrated interest in UN work, strong intercultural communication skills, and fluency in English; proficiency in Portuguese and/or French is a plus.
• Computer literate with standard software applications and ability to produce PowerPoint presentations for workshops.
